Posted on September 3, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey all! Looking for something to do in Savannah for Labor Day Weekend? There’s a Blues and BBQ Festival going on at Fort McAllister State Park on September 4th. I know that many of you will be grilling out this weekend, but this gives you a free day of cooking!
The festival lasts from 10 am until dark, so you have plenty of time to show up, vibe out, and feed your face! From 10 am to 4 pm, there will be historical demonstrations, including crafts, musket and cannon firings, military drills, and daily civil war chores and trades, will be on display. From 4 pm until dark will be the Blues and BBQ, along with a fireworks demonstration that night. Parking is $5, and the BBQ dinner is $10.
This seems like a great Labor Day Weekend activity, but it’s only one day. What else are you getting into this Labor Day Weekend?

Getting Ready to see the DAWGS play!
Posted on September 1, 2010 · Leave a CommentAs many of you DAWG fans may know, the University of Georgia football season officially starts this weekend with a match against Louisiana-Lafayette. Seeing as how Georgia has gone undefeated in it’s last 13 season openers, hopes are high for this one as well.
The dawgs geared up on Monday, practicing in pads instead of just shorts, treating it like a regular season Tuesday practice. The rest of this week will be full of dress rehersals, so their performance on Saturday will be in a peak position. Head coach Mark Richt is focused on getting the guys to work together fluidly, and solidly like a team, especially with so many changes to the roster made recently: “We’ve got to make sure the game plan is tight so that our young men know what to do,” Richt said. “We don’t want to try to trick anybody., The more they know, the more we can keep the tempo we want. … We want to have it down so that we can execute what we want to do and be able to go with great tempo and be physical and disciplined.” (Georgiadogs.com)
Here’s hoping that the rest of this week will prove fruitful for the boys and will give the Bulldog Nation something to be proud of this Saturday. Kick off is at 12:21 pm EST, and it will be televised on the SEC Network.
It’s time to tee it up between the hedges!

Poker, Fried Fish, and a Dog Wash, Oh My!
Posted on August 26, 2010 · Leave a CommentLooking for things to do this weekend in Savannah? Well, Savannah has always been really diverse in the different events that it holds, and this weekend is no different. Here are 3 different events going on this Saturday and Sunday, August 28-29:
First off, there’s the Poker Run (Southern Custom Motors, 6546 Ga. 21, Port Wentworth) at 10 am on Saturday. What’s your game? Texas Hold ‘Em? If so, you may want to try your hand at this event, while giving to a good cause. Abate of Georgia, District 11 and U.S. Military Vets MC are promoting the Poker Run. All poker hand money goes to the winners, while proceeds from door prize tickets and 50/50 tickets will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. Your first hand is $15, and additional hands $5.
Next up, there’s a Fish Fry at the American Legion Post 154 on Sunday from 12-5 pm. Honestly, a fish fry is one of my favorite activities.
Nothing beats a hot plate of freshly fried fish! The Tybee Island Veterans Memorial Committee is hosting the event and there will be live music, a 50/50 drawing and a basket of cheer will be raffled. Admission is $10 and that’s definitely worth it!
Lastly there’s the Charity Dog Wash on Sunday from 9-5. I don’t know about you, but any time that I can get someone else to wash my dog for me, I’m jumping on the chance! He has WAY too much energy for me. This event is sponsored by and held at the Southside Animal Hospital. Local volunteers will wash, towel dry and place a bandanna on your furry friend. Proceeds benefit Spay Panama’s Animals Yes, USA. The cost is only $10, which is half the price of most groomers or vets. Bring your pooch for a good cause!
A weekend of fun and supporting good causes. How very civic.

If so, get yourselves in gear for the Sugarland concert playing at the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena/Savannah Civic Center on October 14th. For those out there that don’t know, Sugarland is a Grammy Award winning country music duo composed of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. They have become immensely famous, and are know for their hit records Stay and Baby Girl. Get your tickets now while they’re still available. They are between $40 and $55.
After hearing the group’s hit Stay, I became a fan of their music; and I’m not a big country fan at all. But Sugarland will definitely have that effect on you.
Check out the video below of one of their hits, Something More.
Renters Insurance = A Smart Choice
Posted on August 19, 2010 · Leave a CommentDo you know what would happen to your belongings if a disaster struck? Would you have to pay for them out of pocket or would they be covered by renters insurance. If you think that renters insurance couldn’t benefit you, you’re wrong.
If you have wisely invested in renters insurance, you don’t have much to worry about. Many people don’t take advantage of renters insurance because of a common myth: the cost. Renters insurance is surprisingly inexpensive. For a small fee a month, normally between $10 and $20, you can save thousands of dollars in case you have to replace your belongings. In all honesty, I’d much rather pay about $10 a month than to pay over $200 to replace a lost television or over $500 for a new laptop.
Renters insurance also covers liability for anything you’re found negligent to have
caused an accident or a fire. Basic renters insurance may run you as little as $100 a year. In my opinion, that’s a small price to pay for piece of mind and the reassurance of securing your precious belongings. This video shows what happens when people choose not to invest.
How do you get renters insurance? National insurance sites like State Farm and All State all carry policies. You can also visit the Preston Grove Apartments leasing office, and they’ll be happy to get you on your way to a higher piece of mind in no time.
Ladies Night at the Mansion!
Posted on August 17, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey ladies! Do you need something to do after work on Wednesday? If so, grab a group of your closest gal pals and head to the Mansion on Forsyth Park on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 6 pm.
Every week, the Cashmir’s Lounge holds a networking ladies night at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. It features $5 specialty cocktails every week and $5 glasses of house wine. This week it’s a fundraiser for Second World Food Harvest – suggested $5 donation at the door and bring canned goods.
I think that this is a great after work activity for you and your girls. You can catch up on old times, and possibly make new friends. Plus you really can’t beat $5 cocktails.
Do you like to go out after work often with your friends?

Lowcountry Traditions Ablaze w/Oyster Roast at the Westin Savannah!
Posted on August 6, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey Preston Grove! What are you doing tonight? If you don’t have anything on your plate, how about putting some oysters on it? I’m talking about attending the oyster roast tonight at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort & Bar from 7 to 10 pm.
This lowcountry tradition happens every first Friday of the month. At this mouth watering event, you’ll get oysters by the bucket, lowcountry boil, tasty grill items, a full bar and s’mores, all while sitting by the firepit trading stories and anecdotes, and just having a good time in general. There will also be live music from local band “Liquid Ginger“ that fits the fun, casual, riverside atmostphere.
The culmination of the night will be the Fireworks Extravaganza which starts at 9:30. For your convenience, you can catch the complimentary water ferry from River Street or take advantage of easy parking at the resort, validated with purchase. If I were you, I’d just take the ferry; it’s more fun that way!
Hope to see you there!

Could Savannah Be Getting an Indoor Football Team?
Posted on August 4, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey football fans! How thrilled would you be if Savannah had a football team? It wouldn’t be pro ball of course, but there are talks of the Louisiana based Southern Indoor Football League considering expanding eastward in Georgia, and Savannah is about as far east as you can get.
D.J. Daniels, a front man for GT Sports and the Southern Indoor Football League visited Savannah to see if it would be a good fit for the indoor league. So far, it looks like Savannah is close in the running with Macon.
The decision hasn’t been made yet, but it’s assumed that something will be solid come mid-August. I think that this would be great for Savannah. It’ll give everyone something to look forward to besides the Sand Gnats for sports, and may bring even more people into this great city. The only downside is that games will take place during the spring; way out of the football season range. Oh well, only time will tell.
The SIFL has teams in Columbus and Albany in Georgia, Greeville in South Carolina and Lafayette and Lake Charles in Louisiana.
