Hairy Dawg, the costumed mascot of the Univers...

As many of you DAWG fans may know, the University of Georgia football season officially starts this weekend with a match against Louisiana-Lafayette. Seeing as how Georgia has gone undefeated in it’s last 13 season openers, hopes are high for this one as well.

The dawgs geared up on Monday, practicing in pads instead of just shorts, treating it like a regular season Tuesday practice. The rest of this week will be full of dress rehersals, so their performance on Saturday will be in a peak position. Head coach Mark Richt is focused on getting the guys to work together fluidly, and solidly like a team, especially with so many changes to the roster made recently: “We’ve got to make sure the game plan is tight so that our young men know what to do,” Richt said. “We don’t want to try to trick anybody., The more they know, the more we can keep the tempo we want. … We want to have it down so that we can execute what we want to do and be able to go with great tempo and be physical and disciplined.” (Georgiadogs.com)

Here’s hoping that the rest of this week will prove fruitful for the boys and will give the Bulldog Nation something to be proud of this Saturday. Kick off is at 12:21 pm EST, and it will be televised on the SEC Network.

It’s time to tee it up between the hedges!

Renters Insurance = A Smart Choice

Preston Grove Apartments

Do you know what would happen to your belongings if a disaster struck? Would you have to pay for them out of pocket or would they be covered by renters insurance. If you think that renters insurance couldn’t benefit you, you’re wrong.

If you have wisely invested in renters insurance, you don’t have much to worry about. Many people don’t take advantage of renters insurance because of a common myth: the cost. Renters insurance is surprisingly inexpensive. For a small fee a month, normally between $10 and $20, you can save thousands of dollars in case you have to replace your belongings. In all honesty, I’d much rather pay about $10 a month than to pay over $200 to replace a lost television or over $500 for a new laptop.

Renters insurance also covers liability for anything you’re found negligent to have

It's great to live at Preston Grove!

caused an accident or a fire. Basic renters insurance may run you as little as $100 a year. In my opinion, that’s a small price to pay for piece of mind and the reassurance of securing your precious belongings. This video shows what happens when people choose not to invest.

How do you get renters insurance? National insurance sites like State Farm and All State all carry policies. You can also visit the Preston Grove Apartments leasing office, and they’ll be happy to get you on your way to a higher piece of mind in no time.

For a donation of $5 or more, a lucky prize number will be assigned to a yellow rubber duck in your honor. All ducks will race against each other in the annual Duck Derby held at Six Flags White Water (in the little Hooch) on June 25th at 2 pm. If your little duckie is the first to cross the finish line, you win! The Top Duck Winners receive GREAT prizes!

Top 5 Dog Movies of All Time

As you know by now, Marmaduke hits theaters this weekend. I don’t know, but it’s something about a lovable, talking dog that I can’t help but love! Maybe it extends from my fascination with ‘Scooby Doo” when I was  younger. Either way it goes, when you think back on it, there have been some really awesome dog movies throughout the years. Many of my favorites are Disney movies; can you really blame me? Here are the top five as judged by MSN.com:

  1. The Incredible Journey” (1963) : The one without Michael J. Fox. Even though that’s one of my personal favorites. :)
  2. “Old Yeller” (1957): If this movie didn’t make you cry, I don’t know what will.
  3. Lady and the Tramp” (1955): My favorite scene is where they shared the plate of spaghetti.
  4. 101 Dalmations” (1961)
  5. Hachiko: A Dog’s Story (2009): This was a straight to video film, but apparently very good.

What’s your favorite dog movie?

Let Them Eat Shrimp!

A steamed tail-on shrimp.

Can you imagine Savannah in the summertime with no shrimp?  I can’t. And this oil spill in the Gulf really isn’t helping. The summer heat is brutal in Georgia, and just the thought of shrimp can make the heat so much more bearable.

With this recent oil spill, it really puts in perspective how fragile the economy really is.

While they’re in full season, let’s support local shrimpers while we can and savor every morsel.:)

Greatest Prank Ever!

Sometimes, people can come up with some really creative pranks. Take this German department store for example. They were advertising some sort of super sophisticated waterbed. As in most bedding departments around the world, people often lie on the bed before buying. Right about now, I’m thinking these people regretted it, lol.

3 Ways You’re Getting Ripped Off

Don’t worry, sticker shock has happened to the best of us. Often times,  you’re stuck buying the high priced items because  you don’t really have any other choice, i.e. life saving medications or movie theater snacks. (Unless you’re at a movie theater that allows you to bring your own food, but who does that except for drive-ins?)

There are ways to avoid spending big bucks however, despite what retailers may tell you. Check out some common rip offs and how to avoid them:

  1. College Textbooks: Textbooks cost the average college student about $900 a year. New editions come out like clockwork, and students are at the mercy of the professors since they pick which books a student will need. (They can also require only new books). So what can you do to avoid the costs of a brand new set of books? Sites like ecampus.com and alibris.com offer better deals than campus bookstores. Then there’s chegg.com, a textbook rental site with an approach similar to that of Netflix
  2. Fitness Shoes: Stores are charging you $140 for curved soled shoes that should keep you fit by walking alone. The only problem is, studies have shown that they only affect the foot and ankle. How do you avoid this? Try joining a gym. :)
  3. Prepackaged Deli Meat: Sure supermarkets offer you prepackaged meat at what seems like a reasonable price, but you know what? The meat at the deli will give you the same thing, fresher, and at a better price. :)

Keep these in mind when you’re out looking for the next big deal. :)
