Best Mexican Food in Town?

Burrito

What do you think Preston Grove? Everyone is raving about Juarez on East Broughton, claiming that they have the best Mexican food in Savannah. I actually think it’s a toss up between Juarez and Jalapenos on Abercorn St. There aren’t too many ways that  you can mess up an enchilada, fajita, or burrito, but there are ways to do it right and I believe that these two restaurants have it down.

What do you think? Where’s the best Mexican food in Savannah?

Strawberry ice cream in a cone.

When it comes to eating your favorite foods, and knowing that there is the possibility that you have to share, or you’re asking someone to share with you, there are certain things that you should consider. Some food practices are downright rude, while others will make the offeree very annoyed with you. Especially if they’re dining on their favorite treat. Here are some things to avoid:

Ice cream digs: This is when a person deliberately digs for all of the tasty additives that make or break ice cream such as cookie bits, chocolate chips, marshmallows, etc. Be considerate. Unless it’s a pint for yourself, I’m pretty sure the next person would like a brownie bit too. My sister used to take all of the marshmallows from the Lucky Charms when we were kids, leaving me the cereal bits. I hated that.

Taking a huge bit out of the middle of someone’s sandwich: Now come on. Everyone knows that the best part of a sandwich is the middle! It’s where all of the meats, veggies, and sauces coalesce into one bite of pure yumminess. If you ask for a bite of someone’s sandwich, don’t take that bite! Bite the edge; some people get very territorial with their food.

Double dipping: Now, this one depends on the person you’re sharing with. Some people don’t mind things like double dipping a fry. Sometimes, the fry just isn’t as good with no ketchup or whatever sauce you use. What’s the point of eating topping-less nachos? You may as well eat a bag of tortilla chips by themselves. Again, it depends on the person.

Do you have any more annoyances/food rules?

girl scout cookiesYou know what Preston Grove? I am a Thin Mint FIEND! My heart soars whenever Girl Scout Cookie season is in. It’s the only time that I’m guaranteed to see that little green box with my favorite treats inside! It’s also one of the few times that its guarnteed that I can get Edy’s Thin Mint Ice Cream from the grocery store. (Yum!!)

However, did you know that your favorite Girl Scout Cookie says something about you? Here are a couple of the most popular varieties:

Minty chocolate wafers with a chocolate coating
With that minty breath, you are popular, magnetic, the center of attention. Mirroring your cookie of choice, you have a smooth, even disposition with just a bit of bite. Your brisk, outgoing attitude and whip-smart sense of humor ensure that you’re never without plans on a Friday night — but you’re also confident enough to roll solo.

You don’t chase trends — you stick with what’s classic. You keep things simple, cherish your family traditions, and can probably knit a scarf. You like to entertain, and whether throwing a casual BBQ or a dinner party for 8, you pull it off with grace, decorum, and attention to detail. Your style icons are Jackie O. or Don Draper, and while you aren’t a Luddite, you probably prefer scrapbooks to Facebook.

You’re a natural born epicure who gravitates towards the finer things in life. Never one to shy away from excess, you’re a freewheeling bon vivant with a large network of loyal friends and admirers. Thoughtful, creative, and discerning, you may err on the side of snobby, but luckily you’re charming enough to get away with it.

You are mellow, genial, and easy-to-please. A bit of a homebody, you like to be surrounded by close friends, home-cooked meals, and high-quality scented candles. You tend to be a diplomat and a peacemaker, whether at work, on the home front, or when airing your grievances with the cable company. You manage to be mature and responsible without being judge-y — an appealing combo.

Does your cookie fit your personality?

Now, here’s a recipe that’s a little different. Specifically designed for those who like a little more spice and a little less meat.

Cheddar Roasted Red Bell Pepper Pinwheels

4 strips of bacon
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 red bell pepper, roasted, seeded, skinned and chopped
1 package cream cheese
1/2 pound Cheddar cheese, grated
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 (12-inch) flour tortillas
Jalapeño peppers (optional)

Cook bacon until crisp, about 5 minutes, and crumble. Add onion and garlic to bacon; sauté one minute. Drain and reserve bacon and onion mixture.
Add red bell pepper, cream cheese, Cheddar cheese, oregano and salt to bacon and onion mixture; put in a food processor. Pulse to blend.
Spread blended cheese and bacon mixture over one side of each tortilla and roll up.
Cut each rolled tortilla into 1/2-inch slices. Serve with a side of sliced jalapeño peppers.
Makes about 96 appetizers.

As Easy as Apple Pie

Are you looking for something to make your apartment smell sweeter than ever? Or are you trying to figure out what to bring to your holiday event? Both have the same answer. Apple pie.

Sure you can pick one up and pop it in the oven or just pick one up that’s already been made, but there’s something special about making it yourself. Baking a pie can be intimidating, I know because I used to steer clear of things that had a breakable crust. Don’t worry though, it really is easier than you might imagine.

I found this apple pie recipe that you could try, but if you have one that you would like to share please feel free to do so.
